THE POWER OF BEETHOVEN • THE VIOLIN CONCERTO
Beethoven's works permeate concert halls and he remains a cultural icon even outside of classical music - his music has been used in movies, commercials and pop songs. No other composer has had such a defining impact on the course of Western music. Throughout this season OP celebrates Beethoven's work by exploring all of his concerti. We start this sensational Beethoven Concerto Cycle with his masterful Violin Concerto played by OP's own concertmaster, Etsuko Kimura.

SULTANS OF STRING
"Energetic and exciting music from a band with talent to burn… the very epitome of world music: no boundaries, no rules… the sort of band and music that would rip up any festival in the country!" (Maverick Music Magazine, UK)
Canada's ambassadors of musical diversity and JUNO Award nominees, the Sultans of String thrill their audiences with their global sonic tapestry of Spanish Flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms, and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz, celebrating musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity. Fiery violin dances with rumba-flamenco guitar while a funk bass lays down unstoppable grooves. Acoustic strings meet with electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound, while world rhythms excite audiences to their feet with the irresistible need to dance.
The band is riding a wave of success from their sold out Yalla Yalla! and MOVE Canadian CD release tours, to their national features on CTV's CanadaAM and CBC's Canada Live, and their quadruple nomination for the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Awards, winning World Group of the Year. Their CDs soared to #1 across Canada on Top Ten national radio charts.

JACQUES ISRAELIEVITCH AND THE POWER OF 3
Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Schubert's "Great"
"Jacques Israelievitch's soloing was like sparks from the depths of a soul. At first they sounded like laments, but really, his little melodies spoke of trembling before the infinite." (Globe and Mail)
Jacques Israelievitch and his trio perform the brilliant Triple Concerto of Beethoven. OP and Maestro Marco Parisotto tackle one of the symphonic war-horses of the early Romantic period with Schubert's "Great". Schumann is reported to have said he thought it to be the greatest instrumental work since the death of Beethoven!

BEETHOVEN'S PIANO CONCERTO MARATHON • CHAPTER I
"This is a young man with real talent. Sheng Cai brought to the concerto some of the same qualities embodied in Pollini's approach, from a clear, singing tone to a subtle sense of rubato to a judicious choice of tempi." (William Littler, Toronto Star)
Beethoven's contribution to the piano concerto literature is second to none. These inspired and wonderfully constructed compositions are arguably the most performed works for piano and orchestra in all of the literature. Young virtuoso pianist, Sheng Cai, OP's first Artist-In-Residence, joins the orchestra in this epic excursion into the genius of Beethoven's works.

BEETHOVEN'S PIANO CONCERTO MARATHON • CHAPTER II
The OP, Sheng Cai and Maestro Marco Parisotto continue their fantastic journey exploring the complete Piano Concerti of Beethoven.
An absolute gem, the Fourth, written in 1806, was the last that Beethoven was able to perform himself. Within a few years his career as a performer was stymied by advancing deafness. Thanks to new advances in piano mechanism technology, for the first time, he writes instructions for use of new pedals into the music. Piano concerto No. 5 "Emperor" is one of the summits of Beethoven's unique and revolutionary style.
